Make a place card for the Thanksgiving table with little terra cotta pots.

Make cute Thanksgiving pilgrim place cards and place them on the table. Guests will love them and they can take them home to plant flowers in them come spring. This craft is easy to make and the kids will enjoy helping and placing them around the Thanksgiving table to show where people should sit.

Materials:

  • small terra cotta pots
  • brown acrylic paint
  • small paint sponge
  • metallic gold paper
  • popsicle sticks
  • beige card stock
  • scissors
  • marker
  • tacky glue
  • apple or fall flower

Instructions:

  1. Paint the rim around the top of the terra cotta pot with brown acrylic paint and small paint sponge. Instead of going around with the sponge horizontally make short strokes vertically so the paint will not smudge on the pot below the rim. It may take more than one coat to cover.
  2. Also paint the popsicle sticks. Paint one side and then then turn them over when dry and paint the other side. Let dry an hour or so or overnight.
  3. Cut a square belt buckle that will fit over the brown colored rim from the metallic gold paper.
  4. Glue it on with tacky glue. This will be the middle front of the pot.
  5. Cut a 3 x 5 inch rectangle from the beige card stock and fold it in half. Write the name of a guest on the outside of the card. Place the popsicle stick inside so the top hits the fold to make a sign and glue the card shut over it.
  6. Place an apple in the opening of the pot and insert the stick sign in the side so that the name faces front. Everyone can have a nutritious snack after while watching the game on TV.

Tips:

The head of a large artificial pompom chrysanthemum or sunflower can also be used instead of the apple. The paper gold buckle is easily removed to use as a flower pot.

Thanksgiving Game

Use Pilgrim Pots to play a thanksgiving game. When everyone arrives give them a small piece of paper or index card and ask them to print what they are most thankful for, but do not put their name on the paper. The host should fold the papers and put them in the bottom of a random pilgrim pot and then put the apple on top. After dinner ask everyone to remove the paper from the pot and read it allowed. Everyone should then guess who the person is that wrote the words of thankfulness.

Thanksgiving Goodie Bag

Before guests leave give them a goody bag that relates to this craft. Include a seed packet of herbs or flowers, a small sandwich bag of gravel and another sandwich bag filled with enough sterile potting soil to fill the pilgrim pot. Include instructions to place gravel at the bottom of the pot and fill it with the soil. Instruct them to plant the seeds, water and place them on a windowsill to grow. Also include care of the herb or flowers that are printed on the back of the herb packate. Soon they will be growing herbs and flowers that will remind them of all the fun and food they had on Thanksgiving Day at their Thanksgiving Feast.
